Update: November 19-27, 2010 Activity

By Darren Washausen, Executive Director

Happy Thanksgiving. Last Saturday was an opportunity to spend with 23 kids that are teens in the foster care system. It was a time of fellowship and getting to know everyone better. The time together went well and we will consider having more of these events next year.

I mentioned briefly that we are invited to a state seminar next Friday, December 4th at Masterson’s here in Louisville. As a result, we are working to expedite the new website coming up online and preparing some handouts for an exhibitor table there. Lisa Owen, Jeff Stumph, and I are planning to be present at the table. I have had the opportunity to speak with a few new people about the aging out mentoring program that we are working on. They are Jeff Stumph and Dorsey Good.

Thanks to everyone for the various donations of furniture. Many teenagers will age out of the state’s system over the next year and we are preparing to equip them with the basic needs of furniture for empty apartments. Pass the word that more furniture is needed. LOCI also has access to an enclosed trailer for moving furniture and can pick it up. Please call 502.253.9304 if you have donations.

We have a meeting on November 30th with state to review progress for starting the mentoring programs and resource store. Right now, we plan to start early next year and will be recruiting mentors for foster teenage mothers and teenagers aging out soon. Also, we are planning an initial party for these mothers on December 14th. I believe that Immanuel Baptist Church may hold the event and have had volunteer interest from Eastside Christian Church and Trinity World Outreach too. I hope to get more details on Monday and then gather those expressing interest together for this event.

Please spread the word among the various people interested in helping the fatherless on the opportunities to serve this ministry. God Bless!

Update: November 9-18, 2009 Activity

Can you say furniture? I think I am in the full time moving business. We have several couches, chairs, kitchen tables, and many other items for our aging out teens. Fortunately Lori Hillegas has a storage place for us, but we are looking for more storage in Kentucky; 1500 square feet would be great!

Last Friday, I had a meeting with Eastside Christian Church in Indiana. They would like an Adoption Seminar in Fall, 2010. They will do a dignity bag and bin drive in the Spring and are anxious to help around Christmas.

Well, we may have the opportunity. On December 14th we are planning to have a Christimas party for teenage girls in Foster Care that have babies or are pregnant. The plan is to mentor these girls in 2010, but for now we need a party with food, child care, gifts, and VOLUNTEERS! More details will be available after December 2nd.

Some of us are meeting with the TONIC group in the next week. This group requested the gathering with LOCI.

On November 15th, I learned that we may get an opportunity to meet with Boys Haven soon. Some of the projects here could be exciting and allow further engagement with the children in the state. Stay tuned on this one!

On November 16th, three volunteers were raised up to learn how they may play a larger role in LOCI activity. One of them may be available to us full time!!

Today, I just spoke to Lisa Owen and there is a seminar day being held for the judges of Kentucky on December 4th. LOCI has been asked to be an exhibitor at this event.  We are going to quickly work to be present and be heard!

Finally, Britt is supplying diapers to all the neighborhood places on a monthly schedule, BUT WE NEED MORE DIAPERS RIGHT AWAY!

We also have a meeting with Patrick Yewell who is the General Manager of the Administrative Office of the Department of Juvenile Services Courts in Frankfurt on November 23rd.

Hopefully you can see that we are growing in activity and pray that God will bless us with all the people and resources to serve in his name!

Update: 2009 October Activity

by Darren Washausen, Executive Director

October was a busy month, so I will do a quick summary of activity and work to do a better job of entering weekly updates in November. I encourage discussion of other activity concerning the fatherless. Also please invite others to join. October consisted of a yard sale to raise money for LOCI and adoptive families in waiting, and adoption seminar, and a Louisville Foster and Adoption Support family night all on October 10th. What a great day with 75 people attending the adoption seminar.

There were also two key meetings in mid October with Kentucky CHFS. These were small team meetings to work out details on some new programs for 2010. The programs are 1. Mentoring to teens with babies, 2. Mentoring to teens Aging out of the foster system, 3. a resource store for kids to help them as they enter the world of independent living as young adults. PLEASE GET THE WORD OUT AND PRAY FOR VOLUNTEERS TO COME FORWARD IN SUPPORTING THESE MENTORING PROGRAMS.

We have also come into contact with a 19 year old girl who is aging out. LOCI put the word out for furniture and we made 7 pickups in the past week! We are ready to support Ana. CHFS informs us that 20 more will be aging out this year. I also met a person from Deer Park Baptist Church who is interested in the efforts of LOCI.

Was there anything I missed?
